Charitable work by N.Y. Giants goes unnoticed in height of 'Celebrity Age'
|
The three Giants understand the fascination with athletes behaving badly. "Bad news travels fast," Chris Canty said in the Giants locker room last week. "We know what sells," Justin Tuck said. Shaun O’Hara calls it "media rubbernecking." "I think it bothers (athletes) a little, because we know there’s a lot of good things transpiring," O’Hara said. "There are a lot of athletes who take on the challenge of being role models and use the platform we’re have to help out a little."
For the many athletes who do charitable work, celebrity trashing is just an unfortunate part of the game. "It’s just a reality we have to live with," Canty said. "Sometimes I think people don’t even realize we’re human." Spotlight, microscope, whatever you call it, when someone like Tiger Woods gets caught in it, what follows is very much like rubbernecking. Except car accident curiosity is usually accompanied by empathy, not glee or viciousness. Rudolph Valentino said it best in the dawn of the Celebrity Age. "You Americans build people up just to tear them down." Now, in the high noon of the Celebrity Age, we have a new national sport. TMZ.com, the entertainment gossip-as-news organization that brought us the relentless scandal details around Michael Jackon’s death and Tiger Woods’ car/marriage crash, is launching an all-sports site, with Twitter and email alerts and all the other stuff so we can all be paparazzi. |
